Gameplay Insights

  • 1

Using Odawara, Swording City to bounce Basalt Monolith back to hand to disrupt Kinnan’s infinite mana combo was a clever defensive play.

  • 2

Jon's ability to bounce Narset with Odawara was countered by a Deflecting Swat, turning the bounce onto Basalt Monolith instead and preventing a potential setback.

  • 3

The timing on casting Final Fortune from the graveyard after milling with Jace’s -5 ability allowed Jon to take an extra turn and continue his combo sequence safely.

  • 4

The synergy between Bergie, God of Storytelling, and Underworld Breach generated consistent mana to fuel multiple escapes and spell casts during Jon’s combo turn.

  • 5

Casting Angel’s Grace at the right moment prevented Jon from losing to self-inflicted damage and draw failures during the milling combo, ensuring the win.

  • 6

The final Brain Freeze and Lion’s Eye Diamond loop to mill all opponents’ libraries was a decisive and clean win condition that leveraged the graveyard recursion and mana generation built up earlier.

Gameplay Summary

The game began with each player developing their board and setting up their respective strategies.

Malcolm/Vial Smasher focused on a Grixis pirate aggro shell with fast mana and disruption, while Narset, Enlightened Exile leveraged graveyard recursion and powerful spells to generate value.

Rograkh and Silas Renn played a very aggressive, fast Grixis deck aiming to win early with explosive plays.

Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy aimed to ramp into massive threats using infinite mana combos.

Early turns saw ramp, disruption, and key pieces like Smothering Tithe and Ranger-Captain of Eos shaping the board state.

A pivotal moment occurred when a wheel effect forced everyone to discard and draw fresh hands, leading to Tyler (Rograkh) attempting a combo with Thassa's Oracle but being disrupted and eventually losing to decking out. In the midgame, Dan (Kinnan) established infinite mana with Basalt Monolith and Trinisphere slowed down his opponents, but Narset's player (Jon) used clever bounce and counterspells to limit Kinnan's plays.

Jon then assembled a complex combo using Underworld Breach, Final Fortune, and Jace, the Perfected Mind to mill himself while generating mana from Bergie, God of Storytelling.

This led to a win sequence involving Brain Freeze and Lion's Eye Diamond that milled out all opponents' libraries.

Angel's Grace from the graveyard prevented Jon from losing himself during the milling, enabling a final Windfall that caused everyone else to attempt to draw from empty libraries and lose the game.

Thus, the game ended with Narset's player winning via a self-mill and lethal decking combo.
