Gameplay Insights

  • 1

Choosing to go first against Zur’s enchantment deck was strategic to avoid early board control from Zur’s powerful creatures and to try establishing mana ramp first.

  • 2

The use of Commander's Awakening provided a temporary card draw boost to all players, balancing resources and accelerating the game pace.

  • 3

Atraxa’s infect and toxic creatures forced opponents to consider damage prevention and removal early to avoid quick defeat.

  • 4

Hakbal’s plan to cast Doubling Season early was crucial to enable explosive growth on creatures with counters, setting up lethal attacks.

  • 5

Ojer Axonil’s incremental burn strategy allowed consistent pressure, making opponents wary of overextending or leaving non-basic lands vulnerable to Price of Progress.

Summary

The game begins with a typical multiplayer Commander setup, featuring four distinct decks with varied strategies. Early turns see players developing their mana bases and casting ramp spells such as Arcane Signet and Explore, setting the stage for midgame plays. Zur's Eternal Schemer leverages enchantment tribal synergies by animating enchantments and generating powerful creatures with multiple keywords, aiming to control the board and create large threats. Hakbal, the Surging Soul focuses on counter synergy, looking to double counters with cards like Doubling Season and then overwhelm opponents with enhanced creatures. Atraxa, Praetors' Voice employs an infect and proliferation strategy, gradually applying poison counters to finish opponents, while Ojer Axonil’s deck mixes burn spells and utility to chip away at opponents and disrupt their plans. Key moments include the introduction of board-wide card draw via Commander's Awakening, which balances resource advantage among players until the city’s blessing is achieved. Early combat interactions involve poison and toxic damage, hinting at Atraxa's growing threat, while Zur’s enchantment creatures start to exert board control. The game’s tension rises as each player positions their unique win conditions: Atraxa with infect counters and proliferation, Hakbal with explosive counter doublings, Zur with enchantment creatures controlling the board, and Ojer Axonil with incremental burn damage. The evolving board state highlights the importance of removal and timing, especially with Zur's creatures requiring immediate attention to prevent overwhelming the table. The interplay of these strategies creates a dynamic game where control, incremental damage, and board presence all compete for dominance.

Description

Welcome to Good Morning Ravnica, the show where we brew coffee and play commander! Today we’re brewing Merit Coffee Co’s Conductor coffee using the Flair Pro 2 Manual Espresso machine. GMR serves the role of being Perfect Seven’s premiere show focused on highlighting different coffees and commander gameplay. What is Perfect Seven? Well, It’s a cut you do right after you cut a deck in half. You grab the top seven and put it right at the bottom! Other than that, it’s a friend group that has recently been playing Magic with some players having more experience than others. There may be some misplays and missed triggers, but we want to capture the authentic gameplay from our sessions and hope you enjoy the fun that comes with our group.

Steven and Lowki bring a friend, Blake to try taking down last episode’s GOAT, Reytromancer.

Expect some fun shenanigan’s as burn, +,1/+1 counters, oblivion tribal, and infect hit the battlefield. Will Reytromancer retain the GOAT trophy or will someone new come out as victor (not the player).
